On March 12, 2026, Urazova B.A., Master of Economics, senior lecturer of the Department of Finance and Economics, conducted a practice-oriented study within the discipline Academic Writing for the first-year students of the educational programs 6В04102–Economics and 6В04104–Governmental and local management. The study was held in the library of the Institute of Education and Management, which created an environment conducive to immersion in scholarly work. Conducting the class in the library helped establish an academic atmosphere and allowed students to become familiar with the real research environment involving the use of sources, catalogues, and academic literature.
The session was devoted to the preparation of a diploma thesis based on the recommendations presented in the book “How to Write a Thesis” by Umberto Eco.
Umberto Eco was an Italian writer, scholar, and philosopher with extensive experience in academic research and teaching. His recommendations are grounded in many years of work with students at the University of Bologna as well as in his own scholarly research.
The book «How to Write a Thesis» was first published in 1977 in Italian. It is considered one of the most well-known and useful guides for conducting academic research and has been translated into numerous languages worldwide.
During the class, students became acquainted with the key ideas presented in the book, including how to choose a research topic, work with scholarly sources, organize research materials, properly structure a diploma thesis, and avoid common mistakes in academic writing. The book covers the entire process—from the initial idea to the final revision—making it an ideal resource for students preparing their diploma theses.
According to the recommendations of Umberto Eco, the topic of a diploma thesis should first and foremost be interesting to the student, academically relevant, and sufficiently focused to allow for in-depth research. The author’s recommendations help students understand that the successful completion of a diploma thesis depends on an appropriate choice of topic, systematic work with scholarly sources, and the effective organization of the research process.
