On April 20, 2026, a guest lecture was held at the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation Studies, delivered by translator I.G. Timofeev on the topic “The Use of Machine Translation and AI in Modern Conditions.” Students of the translation course from the educational program 6B02301 – Translation Studies took part in the event.
During the lecture, I.G. Timofeev addressed a relevant issue: whether artificial intelligence can replace human translators. Examples of the use of modern machine translation systems were presented, along with an analysis of their advantages and limitations in practice. Special attention was given to developing students’ skills in critically evaluating machine translation output, as well as effectively using digital tools in their professional activities.
Students actively participated in the discussion, asked questions, and took part in a survey. The lecturer emphasized that artificial intelligence is a powerful supporting tool; however, the key role in ensuring translation quality remains with humans. At the conclusion of the lecture, it was stated that artificial intelligence is not capable of fully replacing human translators in translation activities.
