Consultative meeting “Identification of ways to resolve the conflict between humans and wildlife regarding the saiga in Kazakhstan”

Founder WKITU d.n., Professor K.K. Bozymov, Director of the National Research Center for Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology ZKITU Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor G.G. Absatirov took part in a meeting on the topic “Identification of ways to resolve the conflict between humans and wildlife in relation to saigas in Kazakhstan”, which was held on May 25-27 in Astana.

The meeting was attended by experts and scientists from such international organizations as the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Wild Animals (CITES), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Council for the Conservation of Wildlife (CIC), Frankfurt Zoological Society, German Union for the Conservation of Nature (NABU).

As a result of the meeting, a national strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of the saiga was developed. This document will be submitted for consideration to the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The main planned areas of work on saigas:

  1. Building scientific capacity for a comprehensive study of saiga populations;
  2. Restoration and improvement of technologies and methods of saiga fishing, as well as training of all stakeholders and organizations;
  3. Development of hunting and adaptive ecological tourism in the saiga range;
  4. Stimulation and involvement of the local population and business in the protection and use of saigas;
  5. Strengthening legislative and other measures to strictly control the circulation of saigas and their derivatives, as well as strengthening the interaction of state and non-state organizations to monitor the condition of animals;
  6. Extensive PR-campaign of the saiga conservation strategy, with the active involvement of youth, volunteers;
  7. Mechanisms will be developed to compensate farmers for damage caused by saigas;
  8. The Committee for Forestry and Wildlife will work to improve legislation, as well as accelerated consultations and meetings with the CITES secretariat to remove the zero quota for saiga for international trade.

Given the need to make urgent decisions, the working group on the development of the strategy, almost all activities are set for the short term.
