An introductory event was held at the Department of Law of the Institute of Sectoral Technologies for students participating in the “Zhas Kriminalist” student scientific club.
The main goal of the meeting was to familiarize students with the club’s objectives and work plan for the new academic year, as well as to showcase the department’s material and technical resources, which allow students to develop practical skills essential for future professionals.
The head of the club, Oteuova A.K., outlined the main objectives of the “Zhas Kriminalist” club as follows:
* Developing practical skills in the application of forensic methods in real investigative work;
* Conducting student research on current issues in forensic science;
* Participating in scientific-practical conferences, competitions, and olympiads;
* Fostering research culture and teamwork skills;
* Organizing master classes with invited experts from law enforcement agencies.
Students were presented with the club’s work plan for the academic year, which includes practical sessions on crime scene inspection, analysis of hand and footwear prints, digital evidence analysis, and participation in national and international student conferences. Special attention during the event was paid to the capabilities of modern forensic equipment
Introduction to Forensic Equipment
Forensic Suitcase
Used during crime scene inspections and contains necessary tools: gloves, tweezers, hermetically sealed bags, fingerprint powders, brushes, adhesive tape for collecting traces, a camera, and other materials. Students were briefed on the proper procedures for packaging and preserving physical evidence.
Lie Detector (Polygraph)**
Used for conducting psychophysiological research. The device records changes in breathing rate, pulse, blood pressure, and skin conductivity, which helps detect hidden emotional reactions. Students were informed about the legal acceptability and restrictions of using polygraphs in Kazakhstan’s criminal procedure.
Electrostatic Device for Dust Trace Collection**
Used to detect and fix faint or invisible footprints, tire treads, or other object traces on various surfaces. The device creates an electrostatic field that allows dust particles to adhere to a special film, preserving even the smallest pattern details.
Fingerprinting Tools
These include kits for detecting and securing fingerprint impressions using powders, magnetic brushes, and special films.
Photo and Video Equipment**
Used for capturing high-quality images of the crime scene and physical evidence.
Lighting Devices and Laser Sources
Used to detect invisible traces of biological fluids, fibers, and micro-objects.
During the session, students not only got acquainted with the equipment but also had the opportunity to try themselves as forensic specialists: working with fingerprinting kits, using powders to reveal fingerprints, and collecting dust traces with an electrostatic device.
The event was held in an open dialogue format — participants asked questions about the practical use of the equipment, the legality of certain investigative methods, and the prospects for the development of forensic science in Kazakhstan.
Students noted that getting familiar with the department’s forensic tools helps bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience and builds skills that are in demand in their future professional careers.
